Factual Analysis: DARFUR: Truth, Tyranny and Tribalism

Are the defenders of Blacks in the Sudan friends or foes?

Recently troubling events taking place in the western regional Sudanese province of Darfur have led a number of human rights organizations to charge the government of the Republic of the Sudan with genocide.  These human rights organizations are fighting to bring world attention to a verifiable tragedy, however they are in many cases being used as unwitting pawns by those who have less than honorable intentions and considerably more control of world events.

The situation in Darfur is not a recent occurrence. It was not created overnight. Many are now becoming aware of the current reality as more information from a variety of sources is being revealed.

At the present time, there is a specific agenda existing in all of the regional areas in which the United States of America becomes involved.  Some might call it a neo-conservative agenda. Recent reports have uncovered inquiries made by large companies indicating extraordinary interest in the natural resources found in the Sudan .   In most cases, this identification acts as a precursor to the further escalation of wickedly manipulative actions aimed at extending Western hegemony over those who lack the military power to resist.

Indeed an article posted recently on the website sponsored by the Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan in Washington DC carried an article headlined “Oil Profits Behind the West’s Tears for Sudan.”

The situation in Darfur is a critical one that must be understood from all available viewpoints. There is an obvious human disaster taking place.  Most estimates place the number dead at over 30,000 with over 130,000 being forced to flee to neighboring Chad , creating a refugee nightmare there as well.  According to Amnesty International over one-million have been displaced within the Sudan with 2.2 million being affected by the violence.  At the same time and perhaps predictably so, Sudanese governmental officials arrive at figures considerably lower.

It must be properly noted that when viewing world affairs or witnessing world events that the effects are real, and the cause is also real.  Your perception of the cause and the effect may however be shaped by the worldview of the news agency, sponsoring entity or news organization providing you with information.  This could cause your view to be inaccurate though in your mind your perception and perceive your vision is clear.  Obviously your analysis would be equally flawed.

This we are witnessing on a daily basis as the litany of voices speaking out on this particular issue continues to grow. Amnesty International, The African Development Institute, Human Rights Watch (HWR) The Sudan Campaign, Justice Africa, Africa Action, Trans-Africa all have strong views on the crisis in Darfur. Not surprisingly even the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has weighed in on the issue, apparently unable to resist the opportunity to again drive a wedge in between Blacks, Arabs and Muslims.

In most cases, a version of the truth is being told, however amidst the chatter a great deal of confusion and misinformation is being spread. Each day questions are being asked raising the haunted specter of genocide.  Is it truly that? Is it ethnic cleansing? Is it neither? Parts of both?

Or is it a divide and conquer tactic used as a smokescreen by the wickedly wise tormentor of the ages?

A recent AFP article published by the Turkish Press quoted Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail as saying "The international community must stop intervening in our country.”  Ismail also significantly downsized the estimates of those dead and displaced. (8/24/04 TurkishPress.com http://www.turkishpress.com/turkishpress/news.asp?ID=25384)

And now, the African Union has entered the picture to work for resolution not to mention Jesse Jackson and Moammar Khadafy who have now added their voices. That should be interesting.

What is really happening and who is telling the truth?  Or perhaps the real question remains unanswered. What happened?  It’s like trying to get an accurate description of events in the minutes following a car wreck. There are as many different versions of the event as you have witnesses. All of them telling parts of the truth…as they saw it.
